Downtown Recognition Awards
Third Quarter
2010
Frank Cupelli is being recognized as the 3rd
Quarter Downtown Recognition recipient for 2010 by the Stowe
Business District Advisory Committee. Frank has spent most of his
life in Stowe and through the help of investors and his New
Millenium Properties, has become involved in various real estate
projects. The West Park
Bottling building has been converted to apartments; a building on Dohrman Street is now home to a busy day
care center and, currently, the former Daly’s Pub building is
undergoing renovation. We thank Frank for his commitment to Stowe
and our revitalization goals.
Second
Quarter 2010
The Stowe Business District Advisory
Committee has chosen Frank
Zieger, Jr. as its 2nd Quarter Downtown Recognition
recipient for 2010. Frank is being recognized for his many years of
community service and his dedication to our revitalization
initiatives.
In addition to
owning and operating Ace Tavern on Broadway for 33 years, he has
also served as Stowe Commissioner for the past 12 years and
has represented Stowe on the
Char-West Council of Governments (COG) for over 7 years.
He successfully lobbied county officials to have Stowe
selected as one of the four original municipalities for Allegheny
Together, a county program to assist in the renewal and
revitalization of their central business districts.
Serving on the
COG's Multi-Municipal Task Force, he secured grants of about
$170,000 to implement Phase One of Allegheny Together's
Stowe Business District revitalization program; and working with the
Public Safety Committee of the Board of Commissioners and the Stowe
Police Dept. had crime watch cameras placed at key locations in the
Business District to reduce crime and loitering. This
was done at little expense to the township.
This quote from
Frank sums up his philosophy: "Revitalizing the central business
district is key to bringing in new businesses and the future long
term stability of Stowe
Township."
The BDAC
congratulates Frank on this honor and thanks him for his many years
of service.
First
Quarter 2010
Constable Joseph Saloshey
is being recognized for his work with the Block Watch Program. He
serves as its captain and also secured "Crime Watch" signs from
Guardian Protection and placed them throughout the community.
Joseph is a life-long resident of Stowe and is also the owner of a
remodeling and property maintenance company.
Fourth Quarter 2009
A valuable and integral part of the Stowe business district is
Theresas Bakery at 805
Broadway Avenue.
Theresa Vasselo started out by baking cookies in her kitchen
at home and they were so well received that she opened her business
in 1995 with three employees. Thus began what would become a highly
successful commercial venture.
Aside from
supplying her own bakery, Theresa supplies twenty-three commercial
businesses with her delicious baked goods. Clients include Giant
Eagle, Shop n Save,
Pennsylvania Macaroni, and Donatellis in Bloomfield.
She now has 15 employees.
She also now makes pizza from scratch, sauces, pasta, and
wedding soup.
It seems only
fitting that we recognize Theresa Vasselo as a classic American
success story and a central part of Stowes business community.

Third Quarter 2009 Downtown
Recognition:
John R. Rybka is being recognized for
his contributions to Stowe's downtown business development. He is
the owner of Lynn's Cafe building at 800 Broadway as well as several
others. John is a long-time resident with an equally long history of
service to the community. As a property owner, he has a record of
well-maintained and managed properties. Currently, he is exploring
a partnership with PHLF (Pittsburgh History and Landmarks
Foundation) to restore the building at 733 Broadway, a key
intersection of Dorman & Broadway.
Second Quarter 2009 Downtown Recognition:
Pittsburghs
Spring Redd Up was set for the weekend of April 24-26 and Stowe
joined in this year by conducting a clean-up of Downtown Stowe.
Seven volunteers came out to join in this first clean-up
campaign organized by Dr. Claudia Wendell, O.D whose business is
located along Broadway.
Claudia is also the Business Development Chair for the Stowe
Business District Advisory Committee (BDAC).
Fourteen bags of trash
were cleaned up on Broadway and from the alleys behind the buildings
on Broadway. Thanks goes out
to Claudia, Stowe Police Chief Frank Marciw; Marty Jacobs, Fire
Chief; Logan McKnight, local student; McKees Rocks Assembly of God
Pastor Jim and Kathy Tracey; and Ray Puskar, Organization Chair of
the Stowe BDAC.
The willingness and
enthusiasm of the volunteers is appreciated! Another clean-up day
will be planned for this fall.
Look for information in future e-newsletter issues and come
out and join us in redding up Downtown Stowe.
First Quarter 2009 Downtown
Recognition:
Marge Erhard, owner of Marge's Restaurant, and Tom Ozga, owner of
Fox's Pizza, have been chosen for the roles they played in the Visit
with Santa this past holiday. Marge provided homemade candies and
Tom generously offered his space at Fox's Pizza. Santa made a visit
and photos were taken.
4th Quarter 2008 Downtown
Recognition:
Ray Puskar and Martin Jacobs were chosen by the Stowe Business
District Advisory Committee as its 4th Quarter 2008 Downtown
Recognition recipients. These men have been hard at work
establishing a Crime Watch initiative for our community. Recently,
preliminary organizational meetings were held to begin planning
efforts to encourage residents to serve as block captain volunteers,
to schedule speakers, and other leadership tasks.
Stowe Township is delighted to honor the outstanding businesses and
leaders who are committed to the vitality of Downtown Stowe.
The following businesses have demonstrated their commitment to our
community, and to the importance of maintaining a strong central
business district for our residents, by electing to locate in our
downtown for ten or more years OR for opening in our downtown within
the last two years. As a component of the Allegheny Together
Program, Recognition Awards will be given to these outstanding
businesses and leaders in the pilot towns. (During this pilot
year, the Allegheny Together program is focusing their efforts on a
preliminary
core study area of our downtown, see details below.)
